Welcome to the Toni Harting Page

Antoni (Toni) Harting migrated to Canada from The Netherlands in 1970 and has lived in Toronto with his wife and canoeing partner, Ria, ever since. He holds two Master of Applied Science degrees in Aerospace Engineering, but left his consulting engineering profession in 1974 to build a new career as a freelance writer-photographer specializing in canoe topics, particularly wilderness canoeing.
Over the years he has become the international expert in padding photography and the products of his work have been widely published in numerous books, articles, brochures, posters, manuals, catalogues, calendars, book reviews, reports and logos. Several of his photographs are included in private art collections. For many years he has presented illustrated lectures and courses on subjects related to wilderness canoeing.
In 1993 one of his photographs was used in the design of a postage stamp by Canada Post. In 1996 Toni published the important book French River: Canoeing the River of the Stick-Wavers (The Boston Mills Press), and he is now recognized as the leading authority on canoeing that historic river. His book Shooting Paddlers: Photographic Adventures with Canoeists, Kayakers and Rafters was published by Natural Heritage Books in 2000. He is the editor of Nastawgan, the quarterly journal of the Wilderness Canoe Association

FRENCH RIVER: Canoeing the River of the Stick-Wavers is the first book to document the exhilarating days of exploration, adventure, and trade on the French River system. It is also a guidebook written by the man who knows the French River perhaps better than anyone else. Toni Harting combines in-depth historical research with years of canoeing and guiding experience, and his own photography and original maps with sketches and maps by early explorers, to create an engaging and comprehensive look at one of Canada's most historically important rivers. This remarkable work also features historic canoe routes and suggests canoe trips lasting from one day to more than two weeks.
The book can be purchased from The Lodge at Pine Cove by sending an email to info@frenchriver.com. We will ship you a copy for CDN$34.95 (US$28.00) plus 7% tax and shipping charges.

SHOOTING PADDLERS: Photographic Adventures With Canoeists, Kayakers and Rafters is the first book published anywhere that presents so much relevant knowledge and useful advice on the why's and how's of paddling photography. The book's purpose is to strengthen the ability of amateur and professional photographers to first discover and then record meaningful images encountered when travelling in canoes, kayaks or rafts. The text, supported by an array of thoughtfully selected visuals, provides a wealth of specialized information that, for the most part, is difficult if not impossible to find in books on general photography. The more than 200 black-and-white and color photographs are discussed through the presentation of one or more visuals on a page, each supported by an analysis that includes explanations, facts, recommendations and other helpful background instruction.
The book can be purchased from The Lodge at Pine Cove by sending an email to info@frenchriver.com. We will ship you a copy for CDN$29.95 (US$23.00) plus 7% tax and shipping charges.

View some outstanding photographs, most of which were made on the French River, by visiting the Toni Harting Photo Gallery.
