A note from the owner...
The idea of the art vacation which we have been running for
4 summers is to create a learning vacation that is fun and
instructional without it being like a typical workshop atmosphere.
Each day after breakfast (we usually leave the lodge at about
9.30 am and return at about 4 - 4.30pm) we go out on the river
- really a system of lakes, islands, rapids, bays and gorges
- to a different location, each person chooses a painting
spot at the location and the instructor goes around to each
student - they are often quite far apart depending on each
persons choice of a painting spot. We have a picnic lunch
that is shared as a group or some people choose to eat it
by their easel. After lunch we continue painting or some people
will swim - we are always near the water - or just relax under
a white pine etc.. I am usually the guide on the art vacations,
as I know the river very well and it is one of the more lovely
times of the summer, so the innkeeper takes full advantage!!
The students range from novices to experts and the mix works
very well. We have one group of four who come back every summer
and it is made up of two wonderful artists and two who are
real novices but they have come a long way in the past four
years.
The lodge is adorned in art, a lot of it by students who
have painted at the lodge and we have sold quite a lot of
their work over the past few summers. The work you do on the
vacation is of course yours to keep.
Each session we have a 'Soft Adventure Day' and last year
we took our 34 foot Voyageur canoe (an extremely stable craft)
down the river with 14 persons aboard - some of the people
had never been in a canoe previously - and had a wonderful
day. It gave participants an idea of how the fur traders canoed
this huge waterway in the 17th to 19th centuries and of course
we had time for drawing and painting. This year we will be
doing something with Roy Paul, an Algonquin, who is a wonderful
person and has an intricate knowledge of Algonquin First Nation
culture. Roy is living at the lodge for the summer.
The evenings are yours to enjoy - in fact the whole time
is and you can opt in and out as you wish - and we often have
a sing song or Roy will tell a story or you may just choose
to spend the evening on your cottage porch watching the stars.
All the best and I hope to see you this season, Alex Strachan
